Reno Tahoe Congratulates Boston in Support of U.S. Bid for 2024 Olympic Summer Games

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) announced today, its selection of Boston as the country’s Applicant City in the bid to host the 2024 Olympic Summer Games. The Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition (RTWGC) congratulates the Boston bid committee and fully supports the USOC’s selection of this historic city. We also congratulate the tremendous efforts of the bid committees in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C. Just like Boston, these three cities would have been an exceptional candidate to host the 2024 Games. Anytime the U.S. has an opportunity to host the Olympics is good for our nation’s athletes and the Olympic Movement, as a whole.

“Boston’s heritage is woven into the very origins of our country and it is also a legendary sports town”, said Jon Killoran, RTWGC Chief Executive Officer.  “We wish them the best of success in the bid process.”

At the same time, our organization remains fully committed to preparing the next successful U.S. bid for a future Olympic Winter Games. The United States entrance into the 2024 bid process is just that and follows in the chronological bid cycle patterns set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Next July, the IOC will choose between China and Kazakhstan for the right to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, a bid cycle for which the USOC chose not to submit a bid. The bid cycle for the 2026 Winter Games is about two years from starting in earnest. In the meantime, the RTWGC is working to bring elite sports competitions and events to our region and state. During 2014, we hosted the World Financial Group Continental Cup of Curling in Las Vegas, smashing the event’s attendance record. We also became the first-ever North American host of the World Curling Congress, bringing over 130 delegates from all over the globe to Reno-Tahoe. Collectively, these two events brought million’s in economic impact to Nevada. The RTWGC is not resting on those laurels. We’re looking forward to making some big announcements early in 2015 continuing this journey to showcase Reno-Tahoe and Nevada as world-class destinations for elite sports competitions and events.

A Little History

The Reno-Tahoe region has been involved in a number of bid efforts including the 1955 bid developed by Alex Cushing of Squaw Valley USA, a bid that resulted in Squaw Valley hosting the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. The award was considered a major upset defeating Innsbruck, Austria in one of the closest votes in IOC history. For the first time since 1932, an Olympic Winter Games was to be staged in the United States. The Reno-Tahoe Olympic legacy had begun... More History
